Halle Berry Kicking Arse and Adventures with Bratty Boy

Let me start by saying that I'm no big fan of Halle Berry as an actress. Throughout her career I have been underwhelmed by her acting ability. Don't even get me started on her Oscar win for that ridiculously bad Monster movie! Yes, she's GORGE (GB's term for gorgeous) and her body is sick - these are non-debateable facts. But her acting ability has never been a strong point. That being said, I recently caught Catwoman on HBO (yes, it was a slow night.) I must profess to you that Halle was robbed of critical acclaim for her work as Catwoman. I jest not!

Halle's work in Catwoman displayed more than an iota of acting ability. She nailed the mousy, clumsy, shy girl character perfectly. Yet, she also nailed the assertive, strong, confident Catwoman character. I was highly impressed! I started watching the movie with beyond low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

My theory on Catwoman's bombing at the box office is this: Hollywood, America, society is not ready to watch a beautiful, strong Black (cat)woman kicking arse! Especially kicking white, mostly male arse. Plain and simple. You can disagree with me but that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

By the by, as you may know, the very handsome Benjamin Bratt plays Halle's love interest in the movie. A few years ago, designergirl and I went with our respective Misters to Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos for a little R&R. (I truly needed the R&R, designergirl, well that's a whole 'nother post. Her life is basically about shopping and R&R. Yes, I'm jealous, aren't we all?) Anywho, there were a few celebrities also catching some R&R while we were at Parrot Cay. To me, the only celebrity that was worthy of any sort of excitement was, yup you guessed it, Benjamin Bratty Boy.

For those who need to know, the other celebrities included Winona Ryder, fresh off her sticky fingers episode. There were bad jokes flying everywhere about watching your bag when she was around. Poor girl, she really did seem like a tortured soul. She was with an unknown, looked like a rock 'n roller boy. The other celebrity was Matthew Perry, whatever.

Back to Bratty Boy. Ladies and gay friends let me atest, Bratty Boy is perhaps even finer in person. (NB, his wife Talisa Soto is also astoundingly beautiful.) But beyond being beautiful, Bratty Boy and the Mrs. were also friendly and down-to-earth. They showed us pictures of their then 8 month old baby girl and were otherwise very nice. Designergirl and I, of course, were mortified to be seen in our bathing suits in front of such a perfect couple. Later at dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Bratty stopped by our table to say hi etc. Afterward, this woman who was on her honeymoon was practically having a conniption, she was in awe that we "knew" the Brattys. As fun as it would have been to make up stories about our longstanding friendship with the Brattys, we confessed that we had just met them earlier in the day. Ah! And so go the adventures with Bratty Boy.

Ji I must disagree with you for most recent comments about Halle Berry. It must have been a really slow night for you and you became so delusional that your mental faculites were out of order for you to believe that Cat woman was a good movie. Cat woman was beyond bad, not because of Halle's performance but because of the script. On the other hand, Monsters Ball was amazing. The performance in Monsters Ball especially the crying scene, the sex scene, the racist scene and her visits to the prison made her worthy of the oscar. That was acting. There were no other actresses more deserving of the Oscar that year.
I guess you being underwhelmed by her performance in her various movies is just a hint of jealousy or you just not understanding what good acting is. Did you ever see her as the crack head in Jungle fever, or the flight attendant on executive decision, or the mother in loosing Isaiah, or the lead in My eyes were watching God. Are we talking about the same actress and her abilities. Did you even see these movies before you wrote the blog. Only an imbicellic cretin would make such a statement.

You gave her credit for being cat like and naive while diminishing her ability as a serious actress. You gave her credit for acting naive and shy. How moronic.

There are not many rolls for women of color, and to be fair, Halle is not the best actress of the black actresses, however, to be underwhelmed by her best work and overwhelmed by that ersatz contrivance of a roll in cat woman leads me to believe that your not qualified to discuss movies in your blog b/c you clearly dont have a clue. Stick to fashion, at least you have some concept of what you speak.

JI, How dare you talk about Halle Berry like that. Cat Woman was a stinker. The chinese guy was the funniest thing on that damn mess.

Halle was hot in Monster's Ball, all that she went through in that role was amazing. I guess you dont really like Halle because of the body and everything else. Dont hate, it is not good.

I will be watching you and whenever you mess up I will be correcting you.

Wow Anonymous 6:15p.m. I normally don't respond to people that refer to me as an "imbicellic (sic) cretin," so I will keep this short. No, I am not a paid movie critic, so I guess I'm not "qualified" to discuss movies on my blog in your eyes. But I was merely musing, which is the point of my blog. Musing, fun and love are what this blog is about! Please people no more hatred.

Anonymous 6:25p.m. I'm so glad you'll be watching me but I don't quite understand the "messing up" part. How can I mess up by giving my opinion?

    Ji:

    You thought Catwoman was good?
    What are you smoking???

Catwoman was all wrong.... from the story/character interpretation to the writing to the acting. (I like Halle but some would say that Halle's Oscar should have been repossessed after that performance!)

However, the primary reason the movie was horrible is because the Catwoman character should be one who loves being evil but is also tortured about this quality.

Ji, Monster's Ball was a good movie. The movie told a good story, has a few memorable lines (e.g., "make me feel good") and was edited so well.

Ji....I guess you don't have a future as a movie reviewer!

if the issue is the merits of Catwoman as a movie, then i think it holds up pretty okay against other recent superhero flicks (e.g., Elektra, Fantastic Four, Batman Begins). and i think halle does a better turn here than she does as Storm in the X-Men franchise (i would've cast angela bassett as Storm; she's fierce!).

and i do buy the theory that the audience ain't ready for a black lady to kick that cracker ass all over town.

an interesting thought experiment for me is the halle berry v. michelle pfeiffer as catwoman scenario. ultimately, i'm partial to michelle's realization, but i think that has more to do with the strength of tim burton's vision. i bet halle would've killed that role while i'm not so sure michelle could've done any better than halle in the latest film. it's a shame b/c there's actually a lot of potential in the story.

02cent, THANK YOU for noticing the main point of my post - that people ain't ready to see a STRONG, BEAUTIFUL, BLACK WOMAN kicking white arse!
